The Revox A77 High-Speed version is a specialized reel-to-reel tape recorder model—available starting around the Mark III and Mark IV generations—that operates at tape speeds of 7½ and 15 inches per second (ips) (19 and 38 cm/sec), rather than the standard home speeds of 3¾ and 7½ ips.
Key Features and Specifications
• Tape Speeds: 7½ ips and 15 ips (± 0.2%)
• Wow and Flutter: Max ± 0.04% at 15 ips; max ± 0.08% at 7½ ips (DIN 45507)
• Capstan & Motor: Features a larger capstan shaft diameter (9 mm instead of the standard 4.5 mm) and offset mounting holes on the capstan motor to properly maintain tape geometry and path at 15 ips.
• Electronics & EQ: High-speed variants often feature specialized audio/output amplifier board configurations and NAB/IEC equalization setups tailored for higher frequency response.
• Reel Capacity: Accommodates up to 10.5-inch (26.5 cm) reels, though tape runs out much faster at 15 ips.
